In a thrilling season for Kings Newton Bowls Club, our men’s first team secured league and cup double success in the South Derbyshire league, winning the David Wain Friday League Division 2 before lifting the Champion of Champions trophy earlier this week.
The team finished 24 points clear of second-placed Allestree to be crowned Division 2 champions and win promotion to Division 1, toasting their success at a recent celebration night hosted by first team captain Paul Chambers.
Yet there was no sign of the action easing off as the first team travelled to Rykneld Bowls Club on Monday, lifting the South Derbyshire Champion of Champions trophy after a stunning win against Stretton Anglesey. Hot off the heels of a first-round win against Horsley, the final 200-196 score clinched the cup in the closing moments in a tight win that went right to the wire.
The club has achieved notable success this season, with our Burton Vets second team and South Derbyshire Tuesday team both surpassing expectations to win promotion from their respective divisions. The Vets second team continue to have everything crossed for a final hurrah tomorrow afternoon as they travel to Stretton Anglesey to fight it out for the Burton Champion of Champions trophy.
With a handful of matches remaining in the floodlit leagues, the club reflects on an exciting and enjoyable season, with our newly-promoted teams relishing the prospect of competing in their new divisions in 2023. As we count down the days until our fortieth birthday bash at Melbourne Assembly Rooms next month with work ongoing behind the scenes for the long-awaited redevelopment of the clubhouse, it’s an exciting time for Kings Newton Bowls Club.
